African woman applying a gentle exfoliant while caring for dark marks

Safe exfoliation for dark marks on African skin

Gentle exfoliation can soften texture and brighten dark marks, but harsh scrubs or peels can easily damage melanin-rich skin.

Why exfoliation helps

Dark marks sit in the upper layers of the skin. Carefully removing dull surface cells can help fresh skin show through more evenly.

  • Improves radiance and smoothness when used correctly.
  • Helps brightening serums and creams absorb more evenly.
  • Should feel comfortable, never burning or stripping.

How to exfoliate safely

On African and other melanin-rich skin, less is more. Over-exfoliation quickly leads to irritation and new dark marks.

  • Start once a week and increase slowly only if your skin stays calm.
  • Avoid rough physical scrubs with sharp grains that scratch the skin.
  • Do not combine multiple strong exfoliants in the same routine.

When to see a doctor

If exfoliation leaves your skin burning, very sore, or much darker in some patches, or if you notice blisters or open wounds, stop all active products and see a doctor or dermatologist, especially if you have a history of keloids or very reactive, melanin-rich skin.

Recommended Justine products to pair with exfoliation

Keep exfoliation to one or two nights a week and avoid combining with retinoids or other strong actives on the same night.

Pair every exfoliation session with sunscreen the next morning—see the sunscreen guide for details.

Always use sunscreen the morning after exfoliating. Freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to sun damage, and unprotected sun exposure can undo months of progress on dark marks.

For SPF guidance, read the sunscreen guide.

Educational only. Not medical advice. Stop using any product that makes your skin very irritated, painful, or swollen, and see a doctor or dermatologist for serious, spreading, or persistent concerns.

Routine steps

  1. Cleanse gently to avoid stripping the barrier.
  2. Brighten with a serum; use targeted corrector only on stubborn marks.
  3. Moisturise to keep skin comfortable.
  4. Protect every morning with SPF 30-50.

Common mistakes

  • Layering too many strong actives on sensitive areas.
  • Skipping sunscreen after adding brightening products.
  • Swapping products too quickly to “speed up” fading.
